Wedding Cake Topper Ideas for an Ethical Wedding

If you've decided to go with a wedding cake for your nontraditional wedding, then you may also be thinking about unique wedding cake topper ideas. Below are some ideas to consider when choosing a wedding cake topper for your ethical wedding.

What is the purpose of the wedding cake topper?

Like almost everything invented by the wedding industry, the wedding cake topper is totally unnecessary.  It can, however, be a fun way to represent you and your partner. Many couples use the wedding cake topper to represent their interests and priorities.  Ryan and I went with a pair of doves, not only because they represent love but because they represent our commitment to peace and because they are gender neutral.

Avoiding the sexist wedding cake topper

If you're planning a feminist wedding or gender-neutral wedding, then you've probably already seen those sexist wedding cake toppers.  You know what I'm talking about.  The bride is pictured dragging a reluctant groom to the chapel.  Ha ha...so funny.  This wedding cake topper really represents how desperate women are to get married, and how reluctant men are.  Talk about unfair stereotyping...

If you are a same-sex couple, you have probably already noticed the heterosexism inherent in most wedding toppers. Fortunately, there are a number of places where you can find a same-sex cake topper. (Check out gayweddings.com.)

You might also want to consider a symbolic cake topper, such as a heart, a peace sign, or some other symbol that is unique to you as a couple.

How can I save money on a wedding cake topper?

Wedding cake toppers are yet another item that comes with the wedding tax.  Though these are usually cheap plastic figurines, the wedding industry has managed to artificially inflate the price of most cake toppers.  Some couples end up spending $75 or more on a cheap item that will end up in a closet or possibly even in the trash!

Like any item that you're looking for when you're planning a wedding on a budget, saving money and avoiding the wedding tax means thinking outside the box.  Don't search for "wedding cake toppers."  Think about what you want your wedding topper to be--images of your college mascots, a pair of hearts, teddy bears, two champagne glasses, flowers, your initials, etc.--and search specifically for that item.  Ryan and I actually found our dove toppers at the dollar store!
